The lamp that wouldn't go out.

09/11/2025

The lamp that never went out.

Once upon a time, there was a small town where every evening a light burned in the windows of every house.

Not bright, just enough to help anyone who came late find their way home.

But on the outskirts of town, in an old house, a lamp burned differently.

It wasn't an electric one, not a candle, but an old oil lamp that an old man lit every evening at the same time.

He put it in the window, and people walking down the dark street outside could always see its light.

One day, the neighbor's child asked:

"Why do you light it every evening? Hardly anyone comes here anymore."

The old man smiled.

"The important thing about light is not how many people see it, but that it doesn't get dark where there can be light."

The child didn't understand, but he remembered the sentence.

The old man left a few months later.

The house remained empty, and the lamp in the window no longer burned.

A few years passed.

The boy grew up, started working, and one evening, when he came home, he saw that it was dark again at the end of the street.

He stopped in front of the old house, and something moved inside.

He went inside, found the dusty lantern, cleaned it, and poured oil into it.

When he put it in the window and lit it, the flame trembled, and then began to burn calmly.

And somewhere deep down, it seemed like he heard a small voice:

– Do you see? It doesn't matter how many people see it, but that it burns as long as it can.

Lesson

Kindness, attention, light — are never in vain.

Not everyone needs to notice it.

It's enough for someone to see it once and carry it on.
