Reserve.

04/02/2026

The spare.

"What's useless to you is sometimes the only thing someone else has to hold on to."

He carried it with him for a long time.

Not because he was attached to it, but because he thought:

it's good to have it.

It was an old phone.

It wasn't shiny, it wasn't fast, it didn't have status.

It just worked.

A spare.

You don't count things like that.

They're in your bag, deep in your drawer, on the "maybe good again someday" shelf.

They don't count – until they do.

That wasn't why he brought it with him that morning either.

He wasn't going to give it away.

He didn't think through what he was losing with it.

He just saw someone,

who didn't have a voice.

He didn't have a number.

He didn't have a way to call life back.

And then the spare wasn't useless anymore.

There was no grand gesture involved.

There was no question, no bargaining.

Just a move that didn't take much thought.

The phone changed hands.

The opportunity found a place.

The world became a hair less cruel.

The one who gave it went on to work.

The one who received it was finally able to call.

And whoever saw all this knew:

this is right.

There are things that we don't get to keep.

But to pass them on when their time comes.

A reserve is not a waste.

A reserve is trust in life.

That one day it will be needed –

not for us, but for someone else.

Kindness is rarely spectacular.

But it always works.
